When this laptop arrived we thought that we had what we were looking for, for the whole company, in terms of power, performance, build quality, battery life, and the compromise between bulk and capability. It is really nice and a big improvement over the previous HP mobile workstations. Only after we found the real pricing of the Dell Precision M4800 , did we realize our mistake. The Dell Precision cost $1k less than list laptop for comparable performance and a 3200 x 1800 screen.

There is nothing wrong with this machine, but give Dell a chance if you are looking for a better value and higher screen resolutions.

Canon 100mm f/2.8 EF Macro Lens USM Review

Prospective buyers of a macro lens for a Canon EOS system have a great first choice in this 100mm Macro. The extra length over a 50mm macro gives much better working distance (space between lens and subject) in the field, and EOS-compatible lenses by other manufacturers match poorly with accessories and are nowhere near as sharp.

Compared with the earlier Micro Motor 100mm Macro that Canon made (which I also own), the USM lens focuses *very* fast. The USM lens also can accept Tripod Collar B (by use of a small plastic adapter)--I recommend you buy the collar with the lens, as adjusting to a vertical composition with a tripod means repositioning everything. The front element is not recessed in the USM model, which makes lens cleaning easier than with its predecessor. And build quality is improved--the earlier model was prone to its switches breaking (could fix it yourself with the ordered part, but really annoying) and eventually the Micro Motor gearing gave out (no trouble so far with the USM ring motor). The USM model will work with Canon's 2x teleconverter by interposing a 12mm extension tube, allowing 2x magnification with lots of working distance, though this is not nearly as nice a solution as the 180mm lens referenced below.

I will quibble with another reviewer--Canon does make sharper lenses, and sharpness compared with the earlier model is virtually the same. But this is still one of the sharpest lenses you can buy, and ergonomically a huge improvement over its predecessor.

Having said that, Canon now has an L-series 100mm macro that is a bit sharper and has better bokeh (out-of-focus highlights). A serious hobbyist might consider that lens, though it costs about 40% more on the street. I purchased the Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro Lens less than a year ago, and am very impressed with its greater sharpness and working distance relative to this lens. If you work much with small critters, take a look at that lens before making a purchase.

If you are building up a set of lenses for outdoor/nature photography and you do occasional macrophotography, this might be the first or second lens to buy. If you work significantly at magnifications greater than 1:1, consider the Canon 65mm 1x-5x Macro zoom.

Dell Inspiron I660-3049BK Desktop PC Intel Core i3-3240 Processor 3.4GHz Windows 7 Home Premium 8GB/1TB Review

Bought this 3 days ago from Staples, same exact desktop computer. My Acer Aspire desktop died after 4 yrs & I bought this Dell since it was on sale & cheap. It has a large hard drive & RAM, disc burner....but that's about it. Upon startup the only desktop icon was the recycle bin & an ebay icon, this confused me as I thought all comps came with preloaded stuff, usually I see tons of icons upon startup of a new comp but this has nothing-it had me worried that I had a refurbished comp instead of a new one, according to a phone call to Dell this is normal they claim. It has McAfee Internet Security anti virus but told me it would expire in 29 days, according to Dell it's only a free trial & only lasts a month, McAfee also didn't work so I had to go to the McAfee website to download a "fix" for it & it finally ran- a fix for a 3 day old computer. Comes with MS Office but this too is a free trial. Tried to hook up my mouse (a mouse which outlasted 4 computers in the past 10 yrs) but the hookup at the end wouldn't go into anything, wasn't compatible so I had to use the Dell mouse I was given with the computer. I also don't understand why the tower is so HUGE, seems archaic since most towers today are short & tiny anymore, this tower looks very 2001, enormous and heavy but so be it. Right under the CD drive is another slot which I thought there might be a 2nd cd drive but upon inspecting it & flipping up the cover there is an empty hole, no clue why this is the way it is, looks almost like someone removed a cd drive from it though I'm sure that's not the case. It comes with Windows 7 which is a plus for me since I don't desire to ever have Windows 8. It basically looks like my Acer that had Windows 7, only difference is the brand name and the lack of pre-loaded software. It's bare bones if I've ever seen it, no software no nothing aside from the standard Windows applications. Aside from that it works fine, quick to respond, fast startup, easy setup, tower is fairly quiet when running, cd drive works fine, comes with a large black optical laser mouse with scrollwheel and basic black keyboard. It does not come with a monitor or external speakers. Memory card slots are in front at the middle of the tower under a flip cover, I have yet to use this or any of the headphone or microphone hookups. It comes with IE 10, which I'm not fond of but still getting used to. I used my own General Electric external speakers as well as my own Logitech light up scissor switch quiet keyboard and they both work fine with no issues. It recognized my Epson printer easily. It has enough memory and a large enough hard drive that's good for tons of photos and tons of music. It comes with Adobe Flash but it wasn't the most current version & caused online games to act strange, after DL'ing the newest flash everything was fine. For an inexpensive computer the size of the hard drive and memory has me impressed and aside from the minor issues I mentioned above everything seems to be working fine. If you need a comp for basic computing or to hold a lot of pics or music this computer would be fine. To give you an idea my last Acer computer had a 500gb hard drive & 4gb of ram & I had well over 3,000 songs on it along with alot of pictures & there were no issues with anything slowing down so this Dell would be more than enough. I've had multiple windows open with this Dell as well and no issues at all. So far so good. Just beware if you want a small space saving tower this wouldn't be for you-it's tall and wide & heavy, 36 pounds. Other than that everything is fine.
