Steinberg Cubase 6 Upgrade from Elements 6,5,& 4, AI 6,5,& 4, LE 6,5,& 4, Sequel 2, SL 3,2,& 1, SX 3,2,& 1 Review

I have recently changed the emphasis of my recording from getting a passable demo for my printed music to using the outcome as my final product. Since my requirements increased significantly I decided to upgrade to the latest version.

The upgrade process was relatively painless. Sort of... The key wouldn't take the upgrade, saying my version (2.0 SX) was too old. I had just installed an Arturia product which, I thought, had upgraded the software for the key. I was wrong - I went to the web site, installed the new on and was able to upgrade the key to 6 without a problem. I know to never assume and always upgrade to the very latest - should have done it before installing the 6 upgrade and save myself a bit of a headache. After I installed I noticed that the box said that the minimum required OS is Windows 7 - I'm using XP on my DAW (the PC is less than 4 years old but I had friends who had awful experiences creating music with Vista). I was a little worried. I've used or demoed a lot of the newer features and many of the old ones that I never had a reason to use and haven't run into a problem.

As I said, I've used, test or sampled quite a few of the features, though I know I am still just scratching the surface. So far everything has worked well and my recordings sound great - any problems are with me.

Well, to be 100% honest - the first time I tried recording midi I had strange latency problems. After getting everything set up perfectly the recording process seemed flawless and latency free yet on playback everything was recorded 1 beat earlier than I played it (I was playing against midi imported from Sibelius). I restarted the PC and have never seen the problem again. I've played in two dozen or more midi tracks, sometimes re-recording the same on multiple passes; not a hiccup.

A similar thing happened the first time I tried to do any "bit-fiddling" with wave files - the outcome, though self-consistent, was not what was expected. I restarted and haven't seen it again. In one session I spent many hours manipulating sound recordings, sometime fiddling with just a small part, say an attack transient, going over and over and never having a glitch.

Overall I have been very happy. The program, after the initial problems which quickly solved themselves, has run flawlessly, does what is expected and does it well. I am very happy with the results.
