Gateway ZX6961-UR20P 23-Inch Widescreen All-in-One Desktop (Black) Review

First off, I must warn that this review may not be very technical. My career does not involve computers, nor does my hobby; I'm not a gamer nor do I do heavy photo/video editing. I *do* use the computer often, and I would say I am slightly above average on computer know-how (though just barely.) So now that you know my background, here is my review:

**Pros**

1. The screen is awesome, I mean jaw dropping nice. Of course the biggest screen I had up until this point was just a 15" from a laptop so my eyes just bugged out at the display. The colors are crisp, the lines well defined. When I popped in a DVD of "Alice in Wonderland" I was amazed at how nice the picture quality was. The size of the screen allowed me to have multiple windows opened at once and I could see them without having to alt+tab through the windows.

2. The processor is fast. I looked it up on Passmark and it scored decent marks which convinced to get it. Sofar, nothing I have done has slowed the thing down. Watching movies off a DVD gave no problems, having multiple programs running in the background with Hulu in the foreground didn't give it trouble at all. Skyping was a breeze. Since I am not a gamer nor video editor, I really can't think of anything I could possibly throw at this computer that it wouldn't be able to handle with ease.

3. Sounds quality is nice, or as nice as can be expected. Again, I'm not comparing it to a home theater, but for what it is, I was satisfied with it.

4. The touch screen features made me feel like I was in "Minority Report." How cool is it to browse the internet and touch on the links, how and organize my photos with my fingers?? It's one thing when you have a touch screen on a little tablet but to have it on a huge 23" screen just makes you feel like you're living in the future. True - the touchscreen interface is limited; you can't Skype on it, you can't do any program that isn't made for that interface but I still thought it had many worthy applications. You can also use the touchscreen outside of the special interface as well though not everything will work perfectly. About the only downside so far? My arms get tired pretty quick! I guess it's time to work out some more....

5. The hard drive is huge. HUGE.

6. The wireless keyboard and mouse are nice too. When I'm watching a move, I like to sit a little bit back from the computer and it's nice to still have keyboard and mouse control that isn't physically connected to the computer. The keyboard is also remarkably lightweight.

7. The multi-memory card reader is great (I'm not sure what the technical name for it is).

**Cons**

1. The webcam that comes with it is not as nice as the rest of the computer. Whenever I Skype, my video is so bereft of colors that it looks black and white. Also, since the screen tilts back, all you see is my small head at the bottom and a ton of wall and ceiling. (I'm short.)

2. I don't like that the screen tilts up and cannot be adjusted. It causes some glare issues, especially with movies when the scene is dark and I see my lamp reflected in some terror-stricken character's face.

3. The CD/DVD drive needs some muscle to close it. It doesn't just pop right in just so, you have give it a tiny shove.

4. The screen brightness and contrast are controlled by capacitive buttons on the lower right hand. Buttons that DO NOT WORK. I mean, I guess it's not a big deal since the screen looks nice as it is, but I really want to change my brightness. I contacted Tech support and of course, it took way longer than necessary. The person took a long time because it seemed like they were reading a script and would say things that did not match with what I just asked. They told me to update the BIOS and contact them if it doesn't work. It didn't work and I just don't feel like wading through the hassle of tech support AGAIN for such a little problem. Maybe I will sometime in the future when I have a couple of hours to burn.

Overall, the computer is great and it gets the job done. However, I'm a little disappointed not everything works as it should.

UPDATE: I contacted customer service again and they said I need to ship it back to them to have it repaired. The shipping will be paid for by them, however it will take them 7-10 business days to fix it (once they receive it) and then ship it back to me. I'm debating if this is worth the trouble of being so many days without a computer...)

UPDATE: I just want to add that my son LOVES the touchscreen feature of this computer. He is two years old (almost three) and the game "Purble" that comes standard on this computer is a big hit. It teaches matching and elementary logic and it's so easy that he gets to touch the screen instead of trying to use the mouse. It's a BIG hit.
