BenQ MW814ST 2500 Lumen WXGA Short Throw 3D DLP Projector Review

Hi, I'm pretty sure that most of you are trying to buy a Widescreen Native WXGA (1280 x 800) 16:9 projector under a $1000 having a good lamp life and a supportive speaker. This review is just for you. This is the perfect budget projector for people like us who want to watch a movie at home or give a presentation at office. Though I've just bought the projector for home purposes.

This is the most handsome looking short throw projector out there in the market. No bulky curves, no extended lens. Just a compact body with well defined lines. White top with a gray border ventilation grille which blends well with the body. This was one of my requirements as I wanted the projector to look good on my walls and not be an eyesore. You wont go wrong with it.

Let's talk about performance. I set this up at a distance of about 1.5 meters and it covers my entire 15 foot wall. This is a short throw projector. Even with ambient light in the room from the window on one of the walls, the picture was viewable. That's where 2500 lumens comes into play :). There is no optical zoom on this projector and the only zoom available is the digital zoom which you will really not need to use anytime. Only the keystone setting available (+-30) which is very important for a projector with a short throw. As you tend to keep the projector close to your wall, you tend to raise it's height in the front. So in order to adjust the image to be a rectangle on the wall, you need a keystone of at least +-30 which this projector has.

The pictures are sharp and clear and the contrast ratio is really good. However, you do see very slight blurring at the edges which no amount of focus setting is able to remove. If you set the focus to edge, then the center becomes slightly blurred. But this is not a breaking factor for me as I said that the blurring is extremely slight at the edges. One more factor which tends to bring down the usability is that you cannot set the keystone and other settings until you've hooked up the projector to an input source. This can be frustrating but if you do not intend to move the projector around, you wont have a problem with that.

The remote control that comes with the projector does not have a storage bay within the projector. This would have been a nice feature to have for those who do not wish to mount the projector to the ceiling. The Lamp Life is advertised as 4500 / 6000 hours, but I must say that the projector is like a room heater. it runs hot. I had to open the windows and ventilate the room. This projector has an advertised audible noise of 33/26 decibels which is considered pretty good for a 2500 lumen projector. I didn't notice any fan noise while I was watching the movie even though I was sitting pretty close to the projector. So no complaints on that front as well :) ... all good !

The last things on the wish list are a bag to store the projector and an HDMI cable. I've had to buy a $40 bag to keep the projector safe and to carry it around and also needed to buy an HDMI cable from RadioShack for $20. But after spending $900 on the projector, spending another $60 pinches your pocket. But as I said, all these are not a deal breaker for me.

So in all, I would definitely recommend this projector to anyone who wants to setup a BIG SCREEN home theater system and impress his girlfriend or others, or just wants to enjoy a nice quiet movie evening at home :)

LOOKS 5/5
USABILITY 4/5 (keystone setting only on an input source, no optical zoom, no remote control storage bay, no carrying case and no HDMI cable)
PERFORMANCE 4/5 (because of edge blurring)
VALUE FOR MONEY 4/5

OVERALL 4.5 / 5
