I am the previous owner of three generations of iPhones and two high-end Android smart phones, so this review is written from that perspective. It's been a while since I've used a traditional flip- or candybar-phone.I purchased the (unlocked) XP1300 as part of a cell phone downsizing plan, with the intention of using it with one of the pre-paid GSM wireless carriers that offers SIM cards and plans. I'm active outdoors, so I wanted a handset that could take some abuse, and I also wanted to get away from being "tethered" to a smart phone: constantly checking email, surfing the internet, playing mindless games, etc.
This phone fits the bill nicely, but be prepared for a frustrating setup and smartphone-withdrawal period.
If you've read and seen the print and video reviews of this phone, you know it's rugged. I've only personally tested its waterproof capabilities, and I'm going to assume it will handle just about anything I can throw at it. This review isn't going to be about it's ruggedness. If durability is the only feature that's important to you, it'll be hard to find a better phone manufacturer than Sonim. But I'm going to talk mostly about the features and the user interface.
First, the features. The XP1300 has:
* Voice communications
* SMS text messaging
* MMS multimedia messaging
* Opera Mini web browser
* MP3/MPEG media player
* FM radio
* Bluetooth
* Calendar/datebook
* Alarm clock
* Calculator
* Sound and voice call recorder
* File storage (with microSD card)
* LED torchlight
The XP1300 does NOT have:
* A camera
* GPS or maps
* A touchscreen
* A QWERTY keypad
* A mini- or micro-USB data/power connector (it's a 3.5mm jack)
* An app store
Voice/SMS. When you insert your activated SIM card (I used Straight Talk wireless), you should have voice and SMS capability right off the bat. Call quality has so far been excellent, and the call volume is adequate. The phone's external speaker is insanely loud, both for ringtones and hands-free use. The SMS messaging is adequate and robust, with the obvious exception that you'll be sending shorter (and probably fewer) messages because of the 12-key interface. Also, there's an Inbox and a Sent folder, but no conversation-threading like on a smart phone. The battery life is amazing, especially if you're used to smart phones. I'm guessing it will last for weeks while in standby mode.
Data. You get 2G. Not 3G or 4G, so it's slow. The phone's data features (MMS, email, web) also take some setting up, as you'll have to change the phone's APN settings to get things to work. Google "Sonim Straight Talk" for articles on getting this done. Suffice to say, it's not like plugging your iPhone into iTunes and watching the magic. It's more like configuring serial port communication on a Linux terminal. Also, the only way you'll "sync" anything with the Sonim (like contacts, calendar, music, etc.) is with their Windows-only "Sonim PC-Tools" software.
Email. The built-in email client is very clunky, hard to set up, and annoying to read. It's text-only, no images. It's also buried in the same menu as the SMS and MMS messaging, which is confusing at first. New email notifications are inaccurate or nonexistent. I ended up deleting my IMAP account from the built-in client, and now I just access Gmail directly from the Opera Mini browser.
Internet. The XP1300 has a built-in browser app, accessible from the menu screen. It's crap. Opera Mini is also installed as a Java app, and it's surprisingly good (considering the lack of screen real estate), but it's not easy to find, since it's buried in the menus with other Java apps.
Bluetooth. It's supposed to pair with a few hands-free headsets. I got it to pair with my car's audio system, but it's wonky. It drops calls and only sporadically sends texts, which my car audio reports as NOT sent, even when they are. I haven't been able to accept incoming calls or get SMS notifications yet. I can't transfer my contact list over Bluetooth, except manually, one at a time. It's probably not worth using this feature, except on a Sonim-approved headset.
The Bottom Line. In closing, while the XP1300 does appear to have many of the same features of a modern smart phone, you won't want to use it as such. It forces you to rely on voice and SMS communications, and choose other, more capable devices for your internet and email needs. But that's not why you buy a Sonim. You buy it for its simplicity and its rugged durability. In fact, if Sonim would focus on improving the usability of their core apps from the main menu screen, expand the Bluetooth capabilities, get rid of the Java app component, and add a little more configurability (like adding more than one SMS alert tone maybe?), this would be the perfect Man Phone.
