Product Description
As TVs become almost impossibly thin, there's never been a better time for a home theater receiver that sounds big and dimensional - but is also simple to use. Music is at the heart of every product that Cambridge Audio creates, and the all new Azur 551R AV receiver delivers sound that's as epic as the picture quality from your movies, music, and TV shows. Delivering truly great sound as well as all the latest processing features is the ultimate test of any home theater receiver. The ability to reproduce music with striking richness and authority is what really separates the 551R from the competition. With 100-watts-per-channel x 7 channels at 6 ohms, the 551R delivers movie soundtracks, TV, and music with power, punch, and superb dynamics. Pure Analog Stereo Direct mode allows audiophile playback of analog stereo sources. Individual crossovers and Advanced Bass Management optimize audio performance. Carefully designed tone controls let you sculpt the bass and treble without affecting the critical midrange. The onboard AM/FM tuner offers both sensitivity and selectivity to bring the best performance to your favorite stations. In terms of connectivity, the 551R boasts four HMDI inputs and a single HDMI output which fully supports 3DTV/Deep Color pass-through and Audio Return from newer digital TVs. It also features a wide selection of analog video connections (ready for transcoding), four digital audio connections, and a total of six analogue audio inputs. Home theater receivers can be complex to operate, but the 551R has been designed to ensure simple set-up and ease of use for the whole family. Cambridge Audio's Microphone Controlled Auto Set-up (CAMCAS) tailors the 551R's performance to any room and comes complete with a microphone to complete this simple procedure. Day-to-day operation is equally straightforward from either the clear front panel controls or the supplied remote.Cambridge Audio - 551R - 7.1 Audio /Video Receiver - Black Review
I am a fan of good quality sound, and I move a lot so I like things with a smaller space footprint. Also, I am not fond of all of this smart-TV, internet hub, all-in-one type gimmicky junk that comes with not just receivers, but also TVs, DVD/bluray players, and dozens of other home entertainment equipment. I feel too many companies are trying too hard to become their own version of the consumers' hope for everything in ONE thing. I also don't need any iPod/iPhone ports or jacks because - as made apparent with the 5g line - that won't last forever and it will eventually become obsolete.I previously owned the Sony STR-DA2400ES. It's a great receiver and has done well for me. Having recently upgraded to 3d, I wanted a smaller receiver that could accept a 3d signal. My BR player is directly plugged into the TV, but my PC and laptop are connected to the back of the 551r.
I have DefTech SM55s, SM45s for my 4 rear channels and an 8060HD for center/sub.
This amp is quiet, HEAVY (a great sign for receiver design), and boasts not just a pure, crystal-clear sound signal but also a HIGH amount of volume and depth. On my old Sony (and older speakers), I would play a movie at 80% to get the same level of audio from this sucker at 50%. I believe it is due to much more proficient and streamlined wattage regulation.
Some customers have complained of not being able to use the OSD (onscreen display) to tweak menu options. Apparently, it is not a hi-def menu so their TVs were unable to accept the SD signal. That wasn't the case for me. Either they upgraded the firmware for my model, and/or my Panasonic 65ST50 is able to pop up display.
Menu design is simple, straightforward and very logically designed. There is an abundancy of options for speaker setup, from which speakers are initiated down to the positioning of the speakers in your room.
The remote is actually the nicest one I've ever used. It's slightly heavy but not unpleasantly so. Nice, tidy and classy button design that is easy to navigate.
Looking into the top grille is also quite nice. You can see the inner workings and it is certainly a step up from the previous two receivers I've owned over the last 13 years!
MUSIC - Listening to my bluray audio discs of the Pink Floyd WYWH and DSotM was beyond pleasurable. I've listened to these discs a good 15-20 times before, and this time heard even more detail and PERFECT dispersion throughout the soundfield. I now want to play hundreds of other albums through this machine, knowing I can gain even more appreciation for the music I love!
MOVIES - Playing movies is just as spectacular. When I played THE AVENGERS I almost had an audiogasm.
I am beyond impressed with the Cambridge Audio Azur 551r. Don't let the 50-watt per channel at 7.1 audio rating fool you; this has PLENTY of gusto! If you're using a 2.1 setup, you get double the wattage output, which in reality is probably not a noticeable bump in decibel level.
If you are looking for a receiver that does what receivers are meant to do - which is play audio, and play it well - and don't mind not getting all the other added features of other amps in this price range - you are really getting what you pay for with this receiver. Excellent quality in design, parts and performance.
