Pro-Ject Essential Turntable in Black Review
I purchased this from an outside site after my 15 year old Techniques gave up the ghost. I read many reviews for this table on different sites and ultimately went with this over the Rega because most reviews said they were comparable and this table was only $299 in matte black. win win.I'm not an audiophile so I can't comment on the very fine details of the table, but I was a DJ for 10 years and have been collecting vinyl for close to 30 years. I know music and am writing this as a first time purchaser of an audiophile piece of equipment.
First thing, this is a beautiful looking and sounding table. It comes mostly with everything you would want (more on that later), the OM-5 cartridge is already installed and is great. it has a great dust cover that is beautiful compared to those of my old tables, it's higher than most and has slightly rounded corners to soften the look a bit.
Thing you need to know about purchasing this:
This is a fully manual turntable. I understood that when I bought it but didn't realize the totality of it until I got the turntable home. Having used an automatic table for the last 15 years this has taken some getting used to. What this means is that the platter doesn't turn until you flip the on switch underneath the plinth and doesn't stop turning until you do the same. The tonearm won't return automatically when the record is over, and most importantly if you want to play a 45rpm record you have to remove the platter and manually adjust the belt to the correct pulley. This is something I hadn't seen mentioned anywhere else, but for the most part isn't that big of a deal. Pro-Ject sells an adapter that will do this automatically so I'm looking into that as I have a lot of 10" records and 12" singles at 45rpm.
Setting the table up was easy but the instructions are not written by a native English language speaker. They're clear, but I set the table up incorrectly as the section about installing the counterweight and adjusting it isn't very good. Find a video on you-tube on how to set the table up and you'll be playing records in 15 minutes.
Many forums have topics about excessive noise from this table which I encountered too when I first set it up. They all point to the motor which may have been a problem two years ago but the ones they're putting out now are definitely silent (to my ears). The noise I was encountering was from the cartridge rubbing against the vinyl because I didn't have the tonearm balanced correctly. (see my notes on set-up). As soon as I re-set the counterweight it plays flawlessly and my fears of having to return this are gone.
This turntable is so much better than what I had before that it forces you to take better care of your vinyl. If you don't clean your records before playing them you will get more pops and clicks then you may be used to, but a quick cleaning and even the old thrift store purchased records sound great though you'll notice the noise in quieter passages and in-between tracks.
If you don't have an amp with a phono setting you'll need to buy a phono pre-amp to use this table. They can be found for anywhere from $20-$200, or you can splurge for the USB version of this because I'm pretty sure it has one built in.
I'm so in love with this table. I play it through an old (10 years or so) JVC surround sound receiver and a set of JBL bookshelf speakers and it sounds amazing. It has revealed parts of music to me that I didn't know existed on records I've been listening to for 20 years (both on vinyl, CD, and mp3). It's definitely worth the investment. I hope I get the same 15 years out of this that I did from my $150 techniques table.
