Product Description
Orion Dobsonians have always been known for superb optical and mechanical quality, wonderful ease of use, and remarkably affordable prices. One other thing they - and almost all other Dobs on the market - have had in common: you pushed the telescope to your observing target by hand. Until now. Orion is pleased to herald another giant leap in Dobsonian evolution with the introduction of the SkyQuest XTg series of fully motor driven GoTo Dobsonians. Now, pointing a Dob to even the most elusive of NGC curiosities is as easy as pushing a button or two on the XTg Dobsonians' illuminated hand controller. High-torque servo motors guided by two pairs of high-resolution encoders then slew the telescope right to your object of interest - any of over 42,000 objects in the GoTo controller's database. No more nudging the telescope tube continuously to keep the object from drifting out of the field of view, either. The XTg automatically tracks the object's motion, keeping it centered in the eyepiece while you savor the view. What's more, the closed-loop electronics of the XTg let you move the telescope manually - or endure the accidental bump - without losing orientation for accurate, automated GoTo pointing!Orion 10135 SkyQuest XT10g Computerized GoTo Dobsonian Telescope Review
I ordered this scope right after Christmas 2012 and have only now gotten to use it. A friend has said he never saw anyone get a new telescope that didn't bring on multiple days of cloudy weather. This scope was recommended by that same friend and he didn't steer me wrong. My first impression was how well this scope was packaged. I am a medical professional I we don't get instruments that are packed and protected as well as this. The base is packaged separately from the optical tube assembly and comes in several pieces. Assembly is not difficult, but having not done this before I worked slowly and carefully. I'm sure I could put one of these together now in no time at all.
The two eyepieces that come with it are adequate for familiarization with the scope but I ordered the 1.25 inch eyepiece accessory kit as well. The 1.25 eyepiece has illuminated cross hairs so it does double duty to help you center objects for initial calibration of the GoTo computer and works in tandem with the illuminated reflex finder scope to get you pointed in the right direction. Once you get it pointed at a reference star you are good to go. I've looked at a variety of object over a wide part of the sky and the goto mechanism never failed to precisely guide and track the object.
When I have consulted product support, both by email and by their live chat, they have been very helpful.
Since nothing is perfect some criticism is in order, but doesn't affect my 5 star rating for this scope. The main parts of this telescope seem to be sturdily built, but I question the sturdiness of some parts. The rack that can be used to hold your additional eyepieces is held on by some rather short screws that go into a wooden part of the base. I can see it getting bumped in carrying the base around and pulled loose. Likewise, the plastic holster is held on by some very small, self tapping screws that go into some rather thin plastic to hold it in place. Someone over zealous in their tightening of the screws could strip them out. This also seems like a part that could get knocked loose very easily because of this weak attachment. The hand controller for the Goto functions seems a bit delicate and lightly constructed. It could be more substantial. The instructions for assembly could stand to be updated and have a few more helpful illustrations. Instructions of how to use the hand controller could include some mock exercises for practice before you are out in the dark trying to figure it out. There were some parts included that were not on the parts list, but are certainly useful. ( I guess It's better to have more than is on the parts list than to have less!)
If you buy just the scope you will have no way to power it. Orion really should include a power cord to at least operate this in the back yard. If you order this scope go ahead and order to power cord. If you plan on using this away from a source of current, go ahead and buy the power station too.
And if you are planning on looking at the moon with this this big 10 inch mirror gathers a lot of light and the moon will be blindingly bright. Get at least a "moon" filter that reduces the amount of light or the more expensive polarizing filter so that you won't be blinded. You will be able to see more detail in the moon using these filters.
Buy this scope, absolutely get some sort of power cord or supply for it. The 1.25 inch telescope accessory kit has the moon filter and several useful eyepieces and well as some other colored filters. It would be very useful as well.
