Like all of our traveler tripods, the CT-3441S folds down to a remarkable length of just 43 cm (16.93 inches) thanks to an innovative design that allows the legs to flip up 180 degrees over the 2-section telescopic center column. In addition, superior composite construction reduces the weight of the CT-3441S to just 1.17 kg (2.58 pounds) including center column.

There is no perfect tripod. There's only the optimal one for a given set of conditions. This one is very light and solid. It's well made and well finished. It weighs in at 2.6 pounds, so it is light. It also folds up to less than 17 in., so it fits nicely in a carryon bag for flying. For light travel, backpacking or bicycling it's a great piece of equipment. I have an Acratech Ultimate Ballhead with Quick Release, attached, which only adds one more pound to the total. The non-rotating legs make locking and unlocking the twist locks on the legs as fast as flip locks. What's not to like?

Well, since the tripod is so light, it can easily weigh less than your camera and lens. That makes a top heavy setup, which is inherently unstable. There is a hook available to add to the bottom of the center column, from which you can hang a weight. That solves the stability problem, but sometimes field conditions make it difficult to hang something under the tripod, especially the camera bag. Think rocky hillside or wet stream bed. This is not a knock on the tripod, just a side effect of having a very light platform. For most of my shooting, I'll take the added tripod discipline of hanging a weight from the device in exchange for the relief my back feels with the lighter weight. As for the hook, it is not spring loaded, like many. I have a bungee net that I use for weight, so that has the elasticity the hook lacks.

Back on the positive side: the tripod can be totally disassembled to clean beach sand and salt from inside. That's something some of the budge brands lack. The tripod comes with the necessary allen wrenches to work on the tripod. The leg tubes are larger in diameter than most lightweight tripods, though thin, for weight reduction. The extra cross section adds to the stability of the tripod. The bottom section of this 4 section tripod is actually as wide, or wider than the bottom of most 3 section, lightweight tripods. Very good. Also the top tubes have nice cushion pads already attached. They are not an extra purchase as they would be for a Gitzo or some Manfrotto sticks.

The tripod also comes with a well made, padded bag. Unfortunately, the bag only fits either without a head attached or with Feisol's own, very small ball head on the tripod. Since the small head lacks the quality of better heads, this means that the tripod will no longer fit in the bag with a bigger head attached. Not great. One other nit to pick is that the plate on top of the center column to which the head attaches lacks a set screw, making the head more likely to come loose.

These are small negatives to weigh against the quality construction and finish of the Feisol tripod. For a high-end product, the price is reasonable. I'd say this is quite comparable to Benro/Induro tripods and a better value than the equivalent RSS or Gitzo tripods.
