Unlike most ribbon motors designed today with an offset ribbon the new Cascade FAT HEAD houses a hand-tuned ribbon element that incorporates the legendary symmetrical ribbon design. This design offers a true figure 8 pattern. The corrugated aluminum membrane itself is positioned in the center from front to back, thus producing a balanced audio input signal to both sides of the ribbon assembly. This design is very useful when executing a mid-side or Blumlein recording set-up and also great for live stage use. The FAT HEAD warm full-bodied signature and increased sensitivity is what you would expect and demand from a professional ribbon microphone and the FAT HEAD delivers. Stop pontificating and just buy a pair. Don't get the standard model go for the lundahl or cinemag there is an obvious difference in sound quality. The lundahls have slightly brighter highs and more controlled lows. Cascade are doing an amazing job banging out mic's for this price, there are a lot of comparisons to the Royers and the obvious price difference (Royers having better build quality and components). But don't be fooled by pro audio snob reviews, the build quality is very good and the sound of these microphones is of the same 'quality' as Royer AEA etc, just different, and not necessarily 'better'. With a great preamp these mic's are true, naturally warm and rounded without the harshness of most of the cheap LDC's out there in the same price range. I would happily have paid $1000 for these bad boys.
