Maybe it's too soon to do this but I wanted to get my first impressions out there in case anyone is considering this machine.

The good points:

Looks: Very stylish. The brushed metal parts are just plain cool. It does have a black plastic bottom but I guess that makes it a bit lighter so that's fine with me.

Speaking of Cool: I have had this baby running since about 2:00 (it's after 10:00 now) this afternoon and any warmth is barely noticeable. There is a bit of noise from the fan, however. If the room is very quiet, you will hear a kind of high pitched squeal that I really only noticed after the machine had shut down for a restart and my ears weren't being assaulted any longer. In a noisy coffee shop, you probably won't hear it at all.

Keyboard: This is why I actually bought it. I tried the keyboard at a local store and I can say that the keyboard makes the machine, for me at least. This is replacing an Acer Aspire 10.2 inch netbook with a keyboard that was so small, it was really hard to use. I actually had to remind myself to spread my fingers out for this keyboard. The configuration of the keyboard in relation to the touch pad means I have less chance of accidentally hitting the touchpad as I'm typing. The keys are actually bigger than those on my desktop keyboard. They are flat and have a slightly rough texture. I really think Acer did a very good job on the keyboard compared to my previous netbook. I think it's as good as the keyboard on the Samsung Chromebook.

Touchpad: Not nearly as sensitive as what I was using. In fact, you have to tap pretty hard to get it to respond. The bottom of the pad works like the left and right buttons on the mouse but if you're not careful, you will get the wrong response. There is, however, a setting you can use to disable the touchpad when a USB mouse is installed. Now that's very handy. The pad is a decent size. I have yet to try all of the supposed finger motions you can use for various functions but I'll probably stick with a mouse most of the time anyway.

Weight: Very lightweight. I don't feel like I'm lugging around a half ton monster.

Touchscreen: Crisp and bright. Responsive. I do find myself wanting to use it more than the mouse sometimes. There is a onscreen keyboard that you can use. The 'keys' are a nice size. There is a tile for the desktop, which will take you to something more familiar. The computer only boots up to the tile screen, though. I've read that the 8.1 update adds an option to boot to the desktop.

The not so good points:

Speed: This is a 1 gig processor so don't expect lightening fast results here. Doing Windows Update (with 70 updates to install, mind you) took forever. It would just sit there and look like it was doing nothing. I would get impatient, stop the download and wonder how I was going to get it all done. Then I discovered the settings option, where I found three power options, one of which was to shut down all apps, update and restart. Used that to get most of the updating done. As I type, I'm downloading the 8.1 upgrade and I'm afraid I'll have to leave the thing run overnight just to get that done. But, since I'm only planning to use this laptop for writing wherever I happen to be, I'm hoping I won't notice the slowness as much.

Windows 8: I wasn't real thrilled to have this OS but after using it for a few months on my Windows phone, I decided it wouldn't be so bad after all. I do miss the start button and from what I understand, the start button comes back with 8.1 but all it does is take you to the tile page so big deal. There are other features being added with the upgrade so I decided to go ahead and get it. There is a learning curve, though. Unless you've already been using 8 elsewhere, don't expect to just jump right in and be productive. It's really, really different. But I think once I'm used to it, it'll be fine. I was able to load Dropbox as well as Scrivener and that was the most important thing to me.

Software Bloat: There is that so no surprise there. I'll probably be getting rid of stuff for a while yet although it looks like there might actually be some useful things amongst the bloat.

Overall impression is that this is a good machine for basic everyday computing as long as you don't mind humming a little tune while you wait for something to load. I will be looking into some kind of optimizer and you can change power settings for a slight boost when plugged in. But for the price point - and the keyboard - I think I can put up with a bit of waiting around. Lack of speed and Windows 8 is what lost it the one star but I wouldn't hesitate to buy again if I needed to.

UPDATE: Had this three weeks now and I could almost give that one star back...in fact, I think I will.

Really gave it a work out that first weekend and it performed better than expected. Still a small issue with the touchpad while typing but the angle of my hands probably has something to do with that. Once I have a wireless mouse, that problem will be virtually eliminated.

Now, let's talk about battery life. Average is about 3.5 hours with normal use, however, I have seen an estimate as high as 7+ hours many times but that is with only my writing software running. Since I bought this for the primary purpose of writing, that is awesome news for me. It means I can take this thing anywhere and use it without having to seek out the nearest electrical outlet. This is why it got that fifth star back despite being a slowpoke when it comes to the processor.
