This is an absolutely amazing device. Sure it's a luxury - but oh how luxurious.

I'm upgrading from an iPad 3 (the first model with the Retina display - which was an upgrade from an iPad 2 before it) because once I held a Mini Retina in my hands, I was astonished that the smaller screen size really didn't *feel* all that much smaller. But the reduced weight and especially the reduced length of the mini, is so astoundingly pronounced in the hand, that I knew it was a must-have.

The screen is just simply beautiful. Pretty much everyone says as much so that's not exactly news, but once you actually use it... the smaller dimension results in a higher pixel density which I can only assume accounts for the sense that this is an even higher resolution and crisper screen than the full sized iPad Retina display.

The form factor is just perfect. Small enough to easily hold in one hand and casually zip around doing whatever you need to do, but large enough to not feel cramped or "small". Easily viewed from the same kinds of distances I would typically view the full sized iPad from. Small enough to easily fit on my desk in ways that the larger iPad never quite did.

And the performance is, no surprise, spectacular. Everything is silky smooth and exceedingly fast. I haven't done any actual quantitative tests on it yet, but subjectively this thing screams. I'm curious to do some wifi performance testing on it since with the new dual radios, I believe it should have a greater range than the older model and also transmit/receive at higher speeds.

Much to my surprise, the Mini Retina is identical in every respect other than its size, to its larger sibling the iPad Air. I would have expected Apple to ever-so-slightly cripple the Mini in order to make people actually want to pay the extra $100 for the larger device, but to my surprise and appreciation, they didn't. There is no compromise with this mini, it is every bit the iPad that the new iPad Air is, just in a smaller more portable form factor.

iOS 7 is taking a little getting used to, since so many basic functional things have changed. But since the device requires it, no choice but to move forward. Progress never waits!

Bottom line, this is a definite luxury device. But if you can afford an iOS tablet, and especially if you already use an Apple-centric computing ecosystem... this is an absolute winner. Get one!
