Panasonic AG-HMC80 3MOS AVCCAM HD Shoulder-Mount Camcorder + VBG260 Battery/Charger + Filter Kit + 32GB SDHC + Wide Angle/Telephoto Lenses + Pro Hard Case HDMI DavisMAX Pro MASSIVE Kit Bundle Review

I was very excited when I received the camera a couple of days ago and thus far it has lived up to all of the expectations I have read in the reviews. A good lighting set when shooting in low light is a must, as this camera does struggle a bit. That is to be expected. I'm not going to focus too much of this review on the camera itself, which is a solid performer and would probably get a 5/5 stars by itself. I want to focus on the associated equipment.

The first thing I noticed when I got the package as it didn't include the hard case. I would love to review it, but apparently it is on back order. I am waiting for the seller to contact me so I can receive it. After exploring the rest of the package, I hope this case is of quality construction, because some of the stuff in this kit is questionable.

The additional rechargeable battery seems to work just as well as the Panasonic brand and has nice long legs. It's cradle is as simple as it can possibly be which makes recharging a snap. This also comes with multiple other devices for charging, such as lighter charger, etc, which will be useful when I start travelling with this camera.

The memory included is a 32GB SDHC card and is fairly standard. I'm not sure who the manufacturer is, but what I could gather it is a class 10 card. The function seems normal and satisfactory. Hopefully it will stand the test of time. I am grabbing an additional high capacity card as a backup. If there is one thing I learned in the field, if it can fail, IT WILL. The memory came with a nice little memory pouch which was not on the selling list. It's a basic tri-fold pouch with webbing on the inside to hold multiple cards. A nice token from the seller.

The additional lenses that are included are actually made by Vivitar and come with small carrying pouches. The fronts are covered by a small snap on cover and the backs are covered by a screw on plastic cover to protect the threads. Included in the package is an adapter as the lenses are not the same size. Overall machine quality of these items looks good. Installation onto the HMC-80 is easy as you simply remove the hood, add the adapter and screw on the lens of choice. I can't comment on the further quality of the lenses because of an issue that cropped up with the card reader. Be careful with screwing the lenses or adapter on too tight, as trying to remove the adapter from either is a real chore and could potentially damage equipment in the process.

The card reader, labeled as a 57-in-1 device is made by Zeikos. Frankly put, this device is utter trash. After receiving my camera the first day, I went around town recording various things while trying out the features of the camera. Being overly pleased with it's performance, in the evening I decided I would go ahead and download the day's shooting onto my computer and play around with it in editing. I plugged in the mini-USB connector into the device and plugged it into my computer, after which I plugged the small 32GB SD card into the device. My computer immediately recognized the device and I began to explore it's directory looking for the files to move onto my desktop. As soon as I started transferring the files over I received an error that the file is either corrupt or no longer exists. I unplug the device and plug it back in. Upon plugging it back in, Windows asked me if I would like to format the disk. After putting the SD card into my camera, my horror set in as the camera confirmed that the SD card needed formatting and all data was corrupt. After formatting the card again and filming a few shots around the house, once again upon inserting it into the reader it corrupted the data. This was repeatable and it failed with consistency. Not once was I able to remove the files from the card with this reader. Reading several reviews of the device it confirmed my suspicions, and in one case 58 people out of 60 had given this specific reader a 1/5 star review. It is of poor design and should have not been shipped with this camera. I am glad the footage I filmed was not during a professional shoot. Nobody wants their time wasted, and this card reader IS a waste of time.

One small issue I'm not quite sure about is the 6 foot HDMI cable. There is no problem with the cable itself actually, it is that it is listed as an additional accessory while it actually came supplied with the camera itself. Why list it under the additional accessories when Panasonic supplies it with the camera to begin with?

The three piece filter kit is fairly nice and like the lenses is easy to install. I especially like the circular polarizer filter as I will be often filming clouds and sky, and this causes skies to be richer and bluer. Overall fairly inexpensive items, and while they work as advertised they are not overly high quality. They come with a small case which is acceptable and functional.

The included tripod is made by truDigital and comes with a small carry bag. This tripod is about as much as I expected, and having worked with poor tripods in the past, I was prepared that eventually I will need one of higher quality design. The weight of the camera makes this tripod a bit wobbly, and the locks and screws along with its cheap plastic design do not look like they will last long in normal use. It is hard to steady the camera on a specific point and the mount doesn't lock positively into it's bed. As I said, I kind of expected this tripod to be mediocre as a good camera tripod will cost a lot more than what I paid in this package. This is just a stand in until I can afford a better one.

The cleaning kit actually has the tabletop tripod inside it. The cleaning supplies themselves are a set of cotton swabs, a small drip container with cleaning solution and a small rag to clean the lenses. It also comes with a small LCD cover package which is self explanatory in that you need to cut it to size, then place it over the LCD before working the bubbles out with the included scraper. The tabletop tripod should NOT have been included with this camera, and it was a poor choice to do so. Simply put, the weight of the camera collapses this tabletop mount immediately. This little tripod will probably be given to someone as it is utterly useless and has no purpose being included in the the accessories. Is it hard to imagine accessories actually working with the device they are included with?

I'll leave on a pleasant note. The contents of the camera itself are extremely nice, and Panasonic shipped two things with the camera that I am very thrilled to have. First is a carrying sling. It mounts positively to the camera and has a nice balance to it and adds extra protection should it accidentally slip from your hands. I was happy to have this as I didn't expect to have one, and I'm constantly worried about breaking my gear since I am personally purchasing it for my company and have a limited budget. Something as simple as a sling gives me peace of mind and I am happy to have this. Another nice touch from Panasonic is a book (there is also an additional simple owners manual) that is written in near essay form about the function of the camera, considerations for lighting, techniques for shooting and basic theory. It is high quality and spiral bound, covers numerous topics and definitely gives the user an introductory and informative course into working with a quality camera. The addition of this book shows that Panasonic cares about it's customers and that they have a positive experience with the equipment. I can confirm this as I called Panasonic numerous times to speak with technicians about this camera. I was always met with positive employees who were technically oriented and seemed to want to ensure I had the necessarily details for an informed purchase. Panasonic, you have earned my trust.

So, here is my basic rundown:

PROS:
- Panasonic AGHMC80 is a high quality camera for the price paid and bridges the gap between consumer and professional filming. It comes with a sling and a very well written book to help introduce you to it's capabilities.
- The included 32GB SD card is very high capacity with 198 minutes of filming according to the camera and comes with a nifty memory pouch.
- The additional battery, docking charger and travel charging accessories work as designed and the battery life seems just as good as the Panasonic.
- While cheap, the additional lenses are a nice touch. Same with the filters.

CONS:
- Large tripod is a bit wobbly under the weight of the camera and is of cheap design.
- 57-in-1 USB reader is garbage and didn't work out of the box and destroyed the data for the first day of shooting.
- Tabletop tripod has no reason to be in this kit as the weight of the camera simply makes it collapse.

NOTE:
- I couldn't review the case as I have not yet received it. I truly hope it is of high quality as I will be travelling and working with this camera often.

Final Comments:
I kind of wish I had held off on this kit and purchased some of the items by themselves. For the price, I could have gotten the camera, a decent tripod, maybe a lens or two and carrying case, all of higher quality. I will allow the company to try to fix some of the aforementioned issues. The card reader was a HUGE letdown for me, and it seems like such a simple thing to get completely wrong. I feel the same way about the tabletop tripod which should not have been sold with this camera. Overall I'm somewhat in the middle with how I feel about the included accessories, and am going to have to purchase replacements for some of it. I couldn't be happier with the camera itself however and I heartily recommend this unit for the budding producer who wants that professional over the shoulder look.
