Yaesu FT-1DRS Dual Band C4FM FDMA Digital/Analog Amateur Transceiver with Built In GPS and TNC- Silver! Review

I've owned this radio for two weeks and though it hasn't been without its frustrating moments, it's been very rewarding. I'm new to APRS and digital but if you choose to stay simple, you can turn it on, enter your call sign (for the welcome page) and start talking. Repeater use is a bit harder than it should be but once you program a few repeaters (the offset is automatic by default) it becomes much easier. (Setting the tone freq is in a menu and should be on an unassigned quick menu button). You'll need to disable the auto-offset for calling and simplex freq's. I've seen criticism of this but it's easy and not a big deal. The auto repeater offset rocks and saves lots of time. APRS is really cool but again, could have been made much simpler by prioritizing menus and also using a free button on the front to access the APRS modem that seems buried in a menu.

The band scope is really handy, specially for traveling to unfamiliar areas, or just finding some activity in your area quickly. Memory write is very easy. You can name your memories (also easy) and make up to 24 banks of 100 memory channels. As with all radios, there are function buttons on the keypad, accessed by pushing, holding, or pressing "F" first and a button. We all scratch our heads and say why is that one there or why didn't they put this one there and the FT1D is no exception, but all-in-all, they are mostly usable and handy. The dial on top has many functions like volume (hit VOL button on the side of the radio which assigns the dial to adjust volume), band scrolling in scope mode, VFO, menu scrolling, etc. I wish this dial was a bit bigger as it could be easier to turn. Just an ergonomic issue. It does have a quality feel though.

The manual is good but you need to download a separate APRS manual from www.yaesu.com. I used my iPad and the good reader app to navigate it. It is well written but still there is a sharp learning curve for those new to APRS. I've had to contact tech support on a few issues, like the programming software (free from yaesu and by ADMS, no CHIRP for FT1D yet) and about display symbology (wires) not in the manual. Ugh. They were very professional and helpful, but like me, are new to the radio and have to research answers also. Hey, it's a new and exciting radio and the challenge of problem solving and learning all the features is part of the fun.

Digital: well, there aren't any digital repeaters available yet (FT1 Repeater coming soon I guess) and finding a simplex QSO is hard enough in 2M/70cm FM let alone in the new FT1D digital format. Time will tell but ICOM's DSTAR wasn't everywhere overnight.

The FT1D is a quality radio and has a quality feel. I've had good audio reports, had a blast using APRS, and have really enjoyed all the features so far. I have the standard battery and the 2000 aHr extended life battery. The only beef I have is that the CD-41 quick charger won't charge the larger battery while mounted to the radio. A design oversight and unfortunate consequence of using the same quick (drop-in) charger across models. See my CD-41 review.

I'm not a professional reviewer so go easy on me.
